Tracking technology chosen to safeguard offshore personnel

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology has been used extensively to track inventory, but now it's tracking personnel. Identec Solutions' WatcherSERIES RFID technology is aimed at tracking personnel in dangerous operating environments, and ConocoPhillips has taken notice, choosing it for the Ekofisk complex in the Norwegian North Sea.

Identec's technology functions under the same basic premise as other RFID applications. An active RFID tag (a tag with its own internal power supply) is supplied to employees and is clipped to their person, similarly to an ID tag. The RFID tags emit a low power radio signal that is picked up by a series of intelligent readers installed at various locations in the facility. Each tag (and therefore each employee) emits a unique signal.

The readers then store or wirelessly transmit this signal data to a central location to provide fast and accurate knowledge of each employee's location. A map of the facility and a real-time headcount are available for reference in the event of an emergency.

Identec states that all WatcherSERIES technology has been rigorously tested and received the necessary ATEX Certification (ensuring its suitability for use in potentially explosive atmospheres). Due to the possible volatile environmental nature of offshore environments, obtaining certification required a meticulous and intensive testing process prior to releasing the technology.

For ConocoPhillips, the RFID installation reportedly translates to enhanced operational efficiency, particularly when dealing with employee safety and security. The system will give the operator a real-time headcount of all employees, efficient and safe entry and exit at all points, and a significant time reduction when accounting for employees. The technology will also enhance the efficiency of time-consuming evacuation drills, a mandatory requirement on all offshore platforms. Finally, the technology will not compromise the privacy of any employee while tracking their location.

Identec states that several other offshore operators in the North Sea will soon be installing WatcherSERIES systems on their platforms. In addition to offshore platforms, the technology is well suited for safely tracking personnel in other working environments as well, including mines, tunnels, and manufacturing plants.
