New software suite promises real-time production optimization

A software package that aims to streamline collaboration between field operations and reservoir engineers was unveiled this week at SPE's Intelligent Energy Conference in Amsterdam. Weatherford's Production Office software suite reportedly standardizes workflows, optimizes all forms of artificial lift, and enables surveillance, analysis, reservoir modeling and basic well testing, all within a customer's existing IT infrastructure.

The suite includes production and well management software that can be customized for the needs of each client. Production companies have the option to choose the necessary modules to address current needs, and they have the flexibility to choose other modules for future system expansions. The suite combines real-time reservoir and operational data in a way that allows collaboration between field operations managers and reservoir and production engineers.

Other tools in the Production Office suite include surveillance and analysis tools to provide notification of underperforming wells, which reportedly replace conventional field surveillance with automated event detection and field data consolidation. In addition, 3-D numerical simulation, reservoir analysis, and production forecasting tools will allow engineers to manage reservoirs with the latest data available.

The suite also includes network management software that allows reservoir and petroleum engineers to model how field-component changes affect each other, with the ultimate goal of changing the components such that optimal field performance is realized.

The software suite is based on open standards that allow users to integrate existing software and hardware systems. These open standards include Web Services and PRODML for data integration, and OPC server and client compliance for accessing existing and future SCADA systems. The suite is built on a standard platform for all software components, which minimizes training time and adoption downtime.

Weatherford envisions the successful adoption of this software suite as providing optimization at the resource, asset and personnel levels. Additional reported benefits include improved rig utilization, early detection of downtime, improve workover planning and forecasting, and identification of system bottlenecks.

"This latest software development represents not only new feature and financial benefits for the users, but the efficiencies created with a single source supplier with a field-proven suite of products makes everyone's life easier," said Dharmesh Mehta, vice president of Production Optimization for Weatherford.
